Meta is treating the 2026 midterms as a full-scale security operation. The company's Election Operations Center will run around the clock, and Community Notes is replacing traditional third-party fact-checkers for the first time at this scale.
A few practical implications stood out to us. New political ads will be blocked during the final week before Election Day. AI-generated or AI-edited political content has to be disclosed upfront, and Meta will auto-label it in both the ad itself and its public Ad Library. The company is also using AI detection to flag digitally altered content in organic posts.
Whether or not we agree with each call Meta makes, these are the rules ads will operate under in November — and they're worth factoring into timelines and creative processes early.
